Abstract
1534406 Filling casks GRUNDY (TEDDINGTON) Ltd 4 Oct 1977 [4 Oct 1976] 41138/76 Heading B8T [Also in Division G1] In a method of accurately setting the volume of a container, e.g. a beer cask, assumed to have a capacity fractionally below its nominated value, the container is filled with liquid, e.g. water, the volume of which is measured, and then an additional, accurately gauged, volume of liquid is forced in under hydraulic pressure to make up the deficiency thereby increasing the internal volume of the container. If there is creep-back, pressure is subsequently re-applied. Apparatus for performing the method comprises a graduated cylinder 10 housing a piston, the cylinder being coupled at 12 to the container, at 15 to a source of hydraulic pressure and at 13 to the additional liquid supply. In use, the cylinder is filled to an amount corresponding to the deficiency, the liquid supply is cut off and the contents of the cylinder are forced into the container.
