1534344 Paper and board manufacture; treating wood pulp INSTITUUT VOOR BEWARING EN VERWERKING VAN LANDBOUWPRODUKTEN 16 Feb 1976 [19 Feb 1975] 05990/76 Headings D2B and D2W A method of making paper and board comprises hydrolysing vegetable material having a lignin content of at least 10% by wt. on a solids basis with an aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid, nitric acid, phosphoric acid and/or oxalic acid having an electrical conductivity of 0.01 to 0.15 ohm-<SP>1</SP> cm<SP>-1</SP> at 60-130‹C in the absence of sulphate until at least 40% by wt. of the pentosans present have dissolved, the pulp obtained containing more than 10% by wt. of lignin on a solids basis and having a Rentosan content at most equal to the weight of lignin and making the pulp into paper or board in a conventional manner, without further removal of lignin. The vegetable material may be maize plant residues, alfalfa grass, bagasse, reeds, cereal straw, beech-, birch-, poplar-, or willow wood. The pulp obtained may be used directly for paper or board manufacture. It is especially suitable for the manufacture of the corrugated layer used in corrugated board, optionally in combination with waste paper pulp.
