Abstract

1533917 Washing waste gas TOKYO GAS CO Ltd 6 Feb 1976 [10 Feb 1975] 4737/76 Heading C1A [Also in Division C5] Hydrogen sulphide and/or hydrogen cyanide is removed from a gas containing at least 1 (e.g. 2-8) mole of ammonia per mole of hydrogen sulphide plus hydrogen cyanide by washing with a countercurrent of adsorbent solution initially containing 0À1 to 7 g of ammonia per litre. The washing can be carried out using 2-10<SP>m3</SP> of absorbent solution at 10-50‹ C. per Nm<SP>3</SP> of gas such as a waste gas consisting mainly of a mixture of 90% by volume N 2 and 10% CO 2 . The gas 1 is contacted with the absorbent solution 2 in a column A and upon initial contact with the solution H 2 S and HCN are rapidly absorbed from the gas by the solution (which at this stage has a high concentration of NH 3 which it has absorbed from the gas) whereas but little C0 2 is absorbed. The gas is then washed in columns B and C with ammonia solution of low concentration. The spent absorbent 9 is regenerated at D to produce a dilute ammonia regenerated solution 6 and a H 2 S/HCN and NH 3 containing gas 10 which is condensed at E into a water phase 12 containing H 2 S, HCN and NH 3 and a vapour 11 comprising mainly NH 3 which is washed with aqueous NH 3 at H and recovered as aqueous ammonia from column J.
