Abstract

1533900 Coating with glass PILKINGTON ACI Ltd 8 March 1976 [7 March 1975] 09255/76 Heading C1M A non-porous article 2 (e.g. of glass or metal) is decorated by: (a) applying to the article (e.g. through silk-screen 1) a mixture 3 of glass frit and, optionally, ceramic or refractory oxide powder, together with a photo-polymerizable carrier; (b) irradiating (4) the mixture 3 without an intermediate drying step to polymerize the carrier so that it binds the frit to the article 2; and (c) heating to fuse the frit to the article 2 and to drive off the polymer carrier. The irradiation (4) may be with ultra-violet light for 0À2-60 seconds. The article may be decorated with a plurality of mixtures 3 (e.g. of different colours) by applying and irradiating each mixture in turn, and then heating in a single stage. The heating may be combined with annealing or tempering.
