Abstract

1533785 Electrical couplings S A MADNI 7 July 1977 [14 July 1976 2 Nov 1976] 15168/76 and 45403/76 Heading H2E [Also in Division F2] A releasable electrical cable, &c. coupling comprises a spigot 10, Fig. 1, having an inwardly-facing flange 13 adjacent its end to latch behind a segmental ring 27 carried in a groove 26 in a socket 20 when the spigot is inserted into the socket. As shown, the segmental ring 27 is surrounded by a tension spring 28 and is cammed radially outwards by a tapered surface 14_on_the_spigot 10 when the latter is inserted into the spigot 20. Alternatively, the spring 28 is omitted and the segments of the ring 27 are made of magnetic material to attract each other. In the form shown, a sleeve 15 surrounding the socket 10 is pushed into the socket 20 to cam the segmental ring 27 outwards for cable &c. uncoupling. In another form, Fig. 2 (not shown), the sleeve 15 is in two parts and is bolted round the spigot only when decoupling is required. In a coupling 50, Fig. 3, for connecting two spigots 40, 40, a single segmental ring 57 is mounted within a housing 51 and latches behind flanges 43 on the two spigots. A seal 53 is provided between the spigot ends. The ring segments 57 are surrounded by a tension spring 58 and may be cammed radially outwards for pipe, &c. decoupling by inward sliding of sleeves 45.
