Abstract

1531794 Concentrating latices ABCOR Inc 20 May 1976 20782/76 Headings C3E and C3L [Also in Division B1] An aqueous polymer latex is concentrated by adding a compatible surfactant to the latex, feeding the latex to the feed zone of an ultra filtration semipermeable membrane device comprising a feed zone and a permeate zone separated by a semipermeable membrane adapted to permit passage of liquid phase but not polymer particles, removing a liquid-rich fraction from the permeate zone and removing a polymer-rich fraction from the feed zone, the surfactant being added to the latex before or during feeding of the latex to the feed zone in an amount sufficient to maintain the polymer particles in dispersion in the polymer-rich fraction and preventing the deposition on the membrane of coagulum from the latex and maintaining an acceptable flux rate for the process. The latex may be, e.g., of natural rubber or, as in the processes exemplified, of polyvinyl chloride or butadiene-styrene rubber.
