Abstract

1456304 Separating oil/water emulsions ABCOR INC 20 Feb 1974 [20 Feb 1973] 7809/74 Heading B1X A process for the treatment of a waste aqueous stream comprising an oil-in-water emulsion containing a surfactant and up to 20% by weight of a soluble oil comprises introducing the stream at a pressure of 10- 200 p.s.i.g. into a membrane unit containing an ultrafiltration membrane which prevents the passage there through of the oil and any suspended particles while permitting the passage therethrough of water and low-molecular weight salts thereby to form a concentrate fraction containing the oil and a permeate fraction essentially free of oil and suspended particles, and separately recovering the concentrate and the permeate fraction. The membrane unit may operate at a temperature of 10-60‹C.
