Circular machines.-Yarn changing, severing, and clamping means for producing horizontal stripes, running in a splicing-thread when making a welt, &c., on rib machines and other types comprise a pair of yarn-guide arms 6, 6a pivoted at the rear ends to radius bars 10 on a bracket 13 attached to the cam-box 1 and operated through connexions by a roller 31 on a pattern-controlled vertically-movable plunger 32. The arms 6, 6<a> are supported at about their centres by levers 9, 9<a> pivoted at 11, 11<a> to the bracket 13 and attached by horizontal links as 26 to levers 23, 24 on a common pivot 25. The ends 27, 30 of the levers 23, 24 are suitably formed to lie in the path of the roller 31 when it is in the high position 35, the lever 24 being thus moved forward to throw the feeder 6 into action, and the lever 23 being subsequently moved back to throw the feeder 6<a> out of action. This movement of the levers 23, 24 brings their ends 28, 29 into the path of the roller 31 when in the low position 34 to enable the feeder 6a to be thrown into action and the feeder 6 to be subsequently thrown out of action. The roller 31 when in either position 34 or 35 will strike the end 52 of a lever 51 and operate through connexions 50, 49, 46 a slide 37 carrying a yarn-shearing and clamping finger 39. The operation of separating the movable shearing and clamping element 39 from the fixed shear blade 42 and clamping-block 45 occurs after the roller has moved the nose 37 or 29 and before movement of the nose 30 or 28, i.e. while both yarn guides are at work. The slide 37 works in a block 36 let in and attached to the dial cap 5. The block 36 has formed in it a gap 38 for the reception of the lower tubular ends 7, 7a of the yarn guides when out of action. Each guide as it moves to inoperative position lays its yarn between tha separated cutting-edges 40, 41 and clamping-members 44, 45. When the roller 31 passes away from the foot 52, the non-knitting yarn is cut and clamped.
