Turning-gear.-An arrangement for starting the engines and lighting in motor-vehicles comprises a fly-wheel dynamo acting solely as a starting- motor and combined with a generator preferably driven directly from the engine shaft, or from the shaft connecting the clutch with the change-speed gear. The motor brushes are automatically raised from the commutator by mechanical or electromagnetic means when the engine starts. The motor is series-wound and may have auxiliary armature windings for maintaining the couple as the speed increases and for use afterwards as generator windings. The motor may be temporarily converted into am alternator for heating, braking, and like purposes by the provision of slip-rings.
