Abstract

1529227 Detecting movement photoelectrically BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP Ltd 3 Sept 1976 [12 June 1975] 25134/75 Heading H4D To detect when a change occurs in a field of view, the field of view is viewed by one or more photodetectors 4, Fig. 1 via a liquid crystal arrangement 3 which varies its spatial opacity so as to duplicate the image of the field. Any change in the field of view leads to a darkening of the image as seen by the detectors. Use of one detector indicates movement somewhere in the field-a plurality of detectors enables the determination of the position of the movement. The liquid crystal arrangement, Fig. 2, comprises a cholesteric liquid crystal 13 containing a pleochroic dye, sandwiched between two transparent electrode (8, 9) bearing glass plates 7, 6. The rear electrode has the potential applied to the 1./c. material varied by a photoconductive layer 12 such that a bright part of the image causes reduced resistance, a higher potential and field and more local 1./c. material-dye orientation with reduced opacity. A red biasing light source 14 does not affect the layer 12, but adds to the illumination falling on the detectors 4 so that they operate at optimum level.
