Abstract

1529223 Testing visco-elastic materials RUBBER & PLASTICS RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 16 Jan 1976 [17 Jan 1975] 2057/75 Headings G1N and G1S To test a visco-elastic material such as an unvulcanized rubber, a sample of the material is subjected to a predetermined pre-compression and subsequently to an additional test compression, and the load relaxation in the sample is monitored. As shown the sample is compressed in a chamber 18 between two plates 20, 38 which may be heated by coils 24, 44. Pre-compression and additional test compression are applied by pneumatic or hydraulic rams 70, 72 and 26, 28 respectively, the load in the sample being monitored by a pressure transducer 42. Solenoid valves 98, 100 for the rams are actuated by timers 94 under control of a logic system 102 which also allows pulses from an oscillator 88 to be passed by a gate 86 to counter 90 between the time A when the transducer 42 senses a sample load and a time B at which this sample load has been reduced by a predetermined fraction. This latter time B is determined by a comparator 84 which compares the output of the transducer 42 with a signal representing a predetermined fraction of the transducer output at time A. The number of pulses counted by counter 90 is thus representative of the load relaxation rate of the material.
