Abstract

1402536 Measuring viscosity electrically NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 11 Aug 1972 [13 Aug 1971] 38077/71 Heading G1N Apparatus for monitoring the viscosity of a fluid comprises a probe which is rotated in the fluid by a motor whose load current is a measure of the viscosity. As shown, Fig.8, for measuring the viscosity of plastics moulding material 54 located in a mould 52 between press platens 50, 51, a glass rod 11 is inserted into a sample of the plastics material in a spillway 53 and rotated via a flexible link by a motor 1. The motor is fed with a constant voltage, determined by a potentiometer 5, Fig.7, and the load current measured by a meter 4. When the load current, and viscosity, reaches a predetermined value set by potentiometer 3, a relay 8 is energized to operate alarms 23, 24 and to control, through its contacts 8(2), the pressure program of the moulding press. The rotated probe may alternatively be shaped as a ball, cylinder or disc.
