Abstract
1528922 Atomizer lance BRITISH STEEL CORP 7 Jan 1976 [13 Jan 1975] 1360/75 Heading G1B An atomizer lance 14 is detachably mounted on a pair of coaxial conduits 16 is immersed into a melt 10 with its free end projecting below the slag layer into molten metal; a stream of non-reactive atomizing gas, e.g. argon, is passed down the outer passage 24 defined by the conduits to the atomizer head to cause metal particles to be detached from the melt, atomized and delivered via the inner passage 26 to an analyzer 18 e.g. a plasma arc spectrograph; the atomizer head consists of a central bore 32 communicating and coaxial with inner passage 26 and an annular duct surrounding the bore to connect outer and innerpassages (24 and 26) and which effects transfer of atomizing gas into the inner passage and which directs the gas away from the free end of the lance past the end of the inner bore 32 to atomize the molten metal; the outer walls of the outer tube 20 are surrounded by a consumable material e.g. a cardboard sleeve 46.
