Abstract

1528787 Magnetic recording media BASF AG 21 Nov 1975 [22 Nov 1974] 47947/75 Heading C3R A magnetic recording medium comprises a non-magnetizable base having bonded to a surface thereof a magnetic layer which comprises a finely divided magnetic pigment dispersed in a binder comprising more than 50% by weight of a polyesterurethane or polyetherurethane, the layer containing 1 to 8% by weight of a monocarboxylic acid ester which is liquid at room temperature, and which is derived from a C 12-20 saturated fatty acid component comprising at least 60% by weight of isomerized C 12-20 saturated fatty acid and a saturated aliphatic alcohol of 3 to 8 carbon atoms. Preferred pigments are iron oxide and chromium dioxide. Suitable acid components for the production of the esters contain isopalmitic and/or isostearic acids. Conventional additives such as dispersing agents, fillers and flow control agents may be incorporated in the layers. The non-magnetizable base may be of polyvinyl chloride or a polyester. The magnetic recording medium may be used in the form of video tapes which have improved life in stop motion and improved abrasion resistance.
