Abstract

152,869. Lang, P. R. Oct. 28, 1919. Processes; moulding balls. - Materials for floor coverings, artificial cork, wood, &c. are placed in perforated moulds and are heated in a vacuum chamber. The materials comprise a filler of ground cork, ground wood, fibres, asbestos &c. mixed with casein and powdered glue and one of the phenol formaldehyde condensation products or syntheses of the same. By way of example, composition cricket balls are made in the mould shown in Fig. 1, in which two cupshaped moulds b, c with numerous apertures d are placed in an outer casing a, and are held in contact by cross pins f. The moulds are placed in a chamber g, Fig. 6, surrounded by a hotwater or steam jacket l, and the chamber is progressively heated from 160 degrees to 200 degrees Fahrenheit, and simultaneously the air and moisture are withdrawn by the vacuum pump k. When all the air and moisture are withdrawn, the air cells in the composition close up and the ball becomes a perfectly dry homogeneous mass. Floor coverings formed 'by cutting sheets from moulded blocks can be made without the usual backing.
