Abstract

1528413 Production of white oils BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 4 Jan 1977 [4 Feb 1976] 04360/76 Heading CSE White oils of DAB 7 quality are prepared by contacting an oil in the lubricating oil boiling range having a total aromatic and sulphur content of not more than 25% wt. with a first catalyst comprising nickel and/or cobalt sulphide and a Group VIa metal sulphide on a refractory support at a temperature of 320‹ C. to 380‹ C., a pressure of 100 to 240 bars gauge, a liquid hourly space velocity of 0À05 to 2 v/v/hr and a hydrogen treating rate of 170 to 1700 m<SP>3</SP>/m<SP>3</SP>, so as to produce an oil having a U.V. absorbance at 275 nanometres of less than 50, and contacting the intermediate product with a second catalyst comprising elemental nickel on sepiolite at a temperature of 100 to 350‹ C., a pressure of 70 to 240 bars gauge, a liquid hourly space velocity of 0À05 to 2 v/v/hr and a hydrogen treating rate of 100 to 1700 m<SP>3</SP>/m<SP>3</SP>, so as to give a product having a U.V. absorbance at 275 nanometres of less than 1À6. The first catalyst preferably comprises nickel and/or cobalt sulphide and molybdenum sulphide on alumina as support.
