Abstract
1528384 Sulphur/asphalt compositions GULF OIL CANADA Ltd 4 Dec 1975 [5 Dec 1974] 49777/75 Heading C3N A method for preparing a coated particulate aggregate composition comprises: (i) blending a metered stream of fluid asphalt having a temperature of 250-350‹ F. with a metered stream of molten sulphur having a temperature of 250-310‹ F., the metered streams being blended in proportions of 25-60 parts by weight of sulphur per 75-40 parts by weight of asphalt, (ii) mixing the blended stream in said temperature range of 250-310‹ F., to disperse the sulphur thoroughly in the asphalt whereby the asphalt dissolves and otherwise combines homogeneously with a proportion of the sulphur and the remainder of the sulphur becomes emulsified in the asphalt as a separate phase of droplets in the size range 1-50 microns, (iii) passing the resulting blended stream of binder in said temperature range of 250-310‹ F., within a period of less than 1 hour into admixture with particulate aggregate having an elevated temperature no greater than 310‹ F., (iv) agitating the resulting admixture to coat the aggregate uniformly with the blended stream, and (v) discharging and conveying the coated aggregate to a point of application before the coating cools to a temperature at which the aggregate is to be compacted.
