Abstract

1528104 Crucibles; air heaters; burners ACE FURNACES Ltd 8 June 1977 [9 June 1976 (2)] 23876/76 and 23877/76 Headings F4B F4S and F4T A crucible furnace comprises a double-walled metal jacket 1 defining an air flow path 4, a refractory lining 2 defining a combustion chamber 1c, a layer of thermally insulative material 3, a crucible 5 mounted on a stand 6, and a lid for closing the furnace. Mounted on the outer wall of the jacket 1 are a fan casing (10, Fig. 1) having louvered openings (13) and a fan (14) for supplying combustion air through the flow path 4; a burner casing (11) including a burner 15 ; and a heat exchanger (12). The heat exchanger comprises an outer casing 16 having a slot 19 through which air enters from the passage 4; a U-shaped exhaust pipe 17 connecting an outlet 20 of the combustion chamber 1c to a flue stack 22; and a U-shaped sleeve 18 surrounding the pipe 17, one end 23 of which is open, one end closed, the sleeve being connected to an outlet 25, 41 for the supply of preheated combustion air to the burner 15. The burner 15 comprises an outer tube 27 connected to a cooling air supply 35, an inner tube 29 connected to an oil (or gas) inlet pipe 31, a burner nozzle 32, a pair of ignition electrodes 36, 37, and a mounting plate 28 having fins 43. The burner nozzle is arranged in the chamber 1c adjacent to the lower end of the crucible, while the outlet 20 to the heat exchanger is arranged adjacent the upper end of the crucible. In operation, air preheated in the passage 4, and the heat exchanger (12), flows via outlet 25 and is delivered to the burner nozzle 32 at opening 41 in the furnace wall.
