Abstract

1525539 Piston seals CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 2 Dec 1976 [5 April 1976] 50334/76 Heading F1F A piston used in a trochoidal engine mechanism comprises a principal seal 36 for engagement with a wall 18 of an associated chamber and which is located in a groove 38 of a width greater than that of the principal seal 36 so as to permit movement therein; a biasing spring 46 within the groove 38 for urging the principal seal 36 outwardly of the groove 38; and a secondary wedge-shaped seal 50 disposed within the groove 38 between the principal seal 36 and the spring 46 and being urged into engagement with a side 24 of the groove 38 and a bevelled surface 54 of the principal seal 36 to reduce leakage through the groove 38. The secondary seal 50 may be elastomeric, e.g. of p.t.f.e., rubber or polyamide, and may be separated from the spring 46 by a spacer 48.
