Abstract

1525177 Treating body fluids in extracorporeal circuit ASAHI KASEI KOGYO KK 16 March 1976 [20 March 1975 29 May 1975 19 Sept 1975] 10472/76 Heading A5R [Also in Divisions Bl and Fl] A membrane apparatus for treating ascites comprises a transporting means, e.g. a pump (see Division Fl), a filter including a first membrane means for blocking the passage of bacteria, cancer cells and other substances of similar size but allowing the passage of protein, a hemolysis preventative means removing air bubbles from the ascites before the filter, an ascites concentrating means coupled to the filter output comprising a second membrane means permeable only to substances smaller than those passed by the first membrane means so retaining the protein in a protein-concentrated ascites which is collected for return to the body. The assembly may also include an adsorber, e.g. activated carbon, for removing pyrogens. The filter membranes are of the type generally employed in ultra filtration, either flat or preferably of hollow fibre form. The first filter has a pore size of 0.2Á or less.
