1524964 Furnace linings IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 21 Aug 1975 [12 Sept 1974] 39823/74 Heading F4B A furnace lining consists of a number of panels each comprising an open-backed box 2 of refractory-bonded inorganic fibre having lugs 3 on the open side to retain the panel by passing through apertures in a furnace wall and being held, e.g. by wedges. The lugs may be integral, or attached to the wall of the panel. The inorganic fibre may be of aluminosilicate, calcium silicate, silica, glass, asbestos or one or more polycrystalline refractory metal oxides, e.g. polycrystalline alumina, alumina/silica or zirconia. The bonding agent may be an inorganic oxide, e.g. silica alumina zirconia or a mixture of these. Or it may be a substance producing such an oxide when heated. This may be applied as a sol, for example a boehmite sol for panels of alumina fibre and an alumina or zirconia sol for panels of zirconia fibre. The box may be made as in paper making by being drawn out of an aqueous dispersion and shaped by vacuum forming. The box is filled with two layers of insulating material, e.g. a layer of non-bonded fibre mass of the same fibre as the box. The other layer or layers may be of less refractory fibre. The box may be closed to retain the filling by an inorganic fibre sheet or a non-refractory sheet which burns off in use. The box may be wound round the periphery by zirconia fibre cords 6 received in grooves 7. The gaps between adjacent panels are also filled with refractory fibre to prevent loss of heat.
