Abstract
1524924 Seaming MECASONIC SA 2 March 1977 [16 June 1976] 08834/77 Heading B5K [Also in Division H4] An ultrasonic transducer comprises an ultrasonic emitter 10 and a sonotrode having a longitudinal portion 18 and an integral radial portion 20. The longitudinal portion 18 is hollow at a node of longitudinal vibration resonance. The radial portion 20 is at this node and is dimensioned to be radially resonant at the frequency of the longitudinal resonance. The longitudinal portion 18 is preferably of length equal to two half wavelengths at the resonance frequency. The sonotrode may be used for welding. As applied to continuous plastics welding, the transducer with the sonotrode is fitted to a rotatable welding head and bears against a rotating backing member. The material to be worked is passed between the tool and the backing member. The sonotrode and the backing member turn at the same speed or at different speeds depending upon thicknesses.
