Abstract

The inorganic materials are treated with a bis-(trialkoxysilyl)-alkane, in particular bis-(triethoxysilyl)-ethane, and a hydrolysis catalyst, if appropriate in the presence of an agent which renders the inorganic materials water-repellent, expediently in an organic solvent. The silicon compounds used, having alkoxy groups, and their solutions in organic solvent are, with exclusion of water, storable virtually indefinitely even in the presence of a hydrolysis catalyst, show a relatively low vapour pressure and can be easily produced. In addition, bis-(trichlorosilyl)-ethane arises as a by-product in the preparation of vinyltrichlorosilane and can easily be converted by reaction with ethanol to bis-(triethoxysilyl)-ethane. The process according to the invention thus represents an advantageous possible use of a by-product which is otherwise difficult to utilise.
