Abstract
1524736 Automatic voltage control CONTROLOGY TECHNIQUES Ltd 23 Feb 1977 [24 Feb 1976] 07143/76 Addition to 1478297 Heading G3R The RMS output voltage of an alternator is regulated by controlling the current in its field winding 14 using a triac 12 or thyristors fired by pulses from a multi-vibrator 28. Inputs to the multi-vibrator are derived from a zero crossover circuit 30 and a comparator 26, in which a reference 24 is compared with a signal from a converter 20 representing the mean square of the output voltage. A multi-plexer 18 samples the sensed voltage at high frequency and controls the mark-space ratio of a modulator 20B which in turn controls an amplifier 20A connected to the converter output through a filter 20C. Current transformers 29 maintain a minimum excitation current, and a circuit 34 reduces the set voltage at low speeds. A protection circuit 36 is connected to the multivibrator 28 by an opto-isolator and monitors field current and alternator output voltage and current.
