Abstract

1524512 Hollow-ware vessels ROYAL WORCESTER SPODE Ltd 26 Aug 1975 [24 May 1974] 23289/74 Heading A4A [Also in Divisions B8 and F2] A hollow-ware vessel, for example an egg coddler, comprises a hollow body 10, Fig. 1, made of a ceramic or vitreous material, and a rim element 12 comprising inner and outer flanges 16, 17, the external face of the outer flange 17 having a screw thread 19 for co-operation with the internal screw thread of a metal lid 14, said rim having an interference fit over the margin 13 surrounding the mouth of the body and being made of a plastics material such as nylon which undergoes a temporary change in mechanical properties such as pliability or elasticity when subjected to a pretreatment such as immersion in hot water; in making the vessel the rim element is subjected to this pretreatment before the two components of the vessel are pressed together. Co-operating projections 20 and 26a, 26b are provided on the rim element and the margin respectively and the outer flange 17 is flared outwardly at 23 to facilitate assembly of the rim element on to the body. The vessel is assembled by apparatus, Fig. 4, comprising a bed member 38 for receiving the rim element 12 in an inverted position, a presser member 45 movable towards and away from the bed along a vertical axis, and an apertured plate 42 mounted for movement parallel to said vertical axis in co-ordination with movement of the presser member, for supporting the body 10. The plate 42 is mounted on tubular members 43 which are slidably mounted on pillars 46. In operation, the presser member descends together with the body 10 and the plate 42 until the latter engages against the bed member 38, and continuation of the downward stroke causes the margin of the body to be pressed into the channel between the flanges 16 and 17 of the rim element. When the presser member is retracted, a flange 45a engages underneath a plate 48 mounted on the tubular members 43 and causes the tubular members 43 and plate 42 to move upwardly, thereby permitting removal of the assembled vessel.
