Abstract

1524272 Melting ferrous metal KLOCKNER WERKE AG 8 Jan 1976 [6 Feb 1975] 00591/76 Heading C7D Scrap and/or sponge are continuously melted in a shaft furnace of constant cross-section by means of a fuel-oxygen flame applied to the bottom of the charge column to form an oxidizing zone. Incorporated in the charge are large slow-reacting pieces of coal of sufficient dimensions to pass through the oxidizing zone and collect in the bottom of the furnace. Advantageously the coal pieces weigh 2-10kg each, are provided with a reaction-inhibiting- coating such as milk of lime, and form 2-6 wt. per cent of the charge.
