Abstract

1523942 Heat transfer wall for condensation HITACHI Ltd and HITACHI CABLE Ltd 12 Jan 1976 [13 Jan 1975 22 Sept 1975] 01012/76 Heading F4S [Also in Division B3] A heat-transfer wall for vapour condensation thereon has a surface comprising ridges 3 with grooves 2 there between, the edges of the ridges 3 having notches 4 therein of less depth than the grooves. Peaks 5 between the notches 4 may be bent over (as illustrated in Fig. 3, not shown) so as partly to cover the grooves 2. The surface may be (a) the outer surface of a copper tube used in a refrigerator, (b) the inner surface of a heat pipe or (c) a flat surface of a plate. In providing the surface on the outside of a copper tube, helical grooves (which are to provide the notches 4) are formed using a lathe provided with rolls having knurling ridges. Thereafter, helical grooves 2 are cut using a lathe provided with cutting tools which act like ploughs on the copper. For bending the peaks 5, there is a die (7), Fig. 4 (not shown). Specified dimensions (before any bending of the peaks 5) are: spacing between the adjacent grooves 2 of not more than 1 mm.; depth of each groove 2 (as measured from the highest point of each ridge 3) of not more than 2 mm.; and spacing between adjacent notches 4 of not more than 1 mm. The side edge surfaces and the bottom edge of each notch are all inclined with respect to the surface of the heat-transfer wall. The notches formed in the adjacent ridges are staggered from one another lengthwise of the ridges.
