Abstract

1523432 Ordnance loading devices MARCONI CO Ltd 29 June 1972 [29 Oct 1971] 50411/71 Heading F3C A turret gun arrangement comprises within the turret a plurality of concentric annular storage members for storing rounds of ammunition for the gun, there being means for selectively moving a round of ammunition from its position in a storage member to a position in which it may be engaged by means for offering up the round to the breech loading mechanism of the gun. A construction of fighting tank is described in which the turret contains no personnel but houses concentric annular storage members, one for each of a different class of ammunition. A central tube 6 passes from top to bottom of the main body 8 of the turret which has within its outer wall three coaxial walls 9, 10, 11 providing three coaxial chambers 12, 13, 14. These walls are flanged on their upper surfaces to carry rollers 15 supporting three coaxial ammunition storage indexing ring members 16, 17, 18 which may be individually rotated. Each member 16, 17, 18 consists of an upper ring 26 carrying a ring gear and a lower ring 27 connected by sidewalls to define a circumferentially extending space in which individual plates 28 are supported by the lower rings 27. The rounds of ammunition are supported by the plates 28, extending through perforations in the lower rings 27 to hang down within coaxial chambers 12, 13, 14, The rounds are loaded through holes 29 in the upper rings 26. Slots 30 are provided in the sidewalls of ring members 16, 17, 18 so that when the perforations in the lower rings of all three ring members are radially aligned, radially extending slots appear which are of sufficient width to pass the body of a round of ammunition. Slidably mounted on the central tube 6 is a lifting platform 31 which rests in a passageway 32 cut through the walls 9, 10, 11 and which has a cupped end 33 for engaging the end of a round of ammunition positioned immediately beneath the holes in the outer ring member 16. A collar 35 pivotally mounted in a loading gantry 36 of the gun is positioned directly above the cupped end 33. Within passageway 32 is a transfer fork 41 mounted on an actuator 42, this serving to engage a round of ammunition in either of the two inner ring members 17, 18 as these are rotated towards the fork and to move the round into the outer ring member 16.
