1523303 Aircraft safety seats BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP Ltd 13 Aug 1976 [16 Aug 1975] 34179/75 Heading A4J An aircraft seat includes a seat squab (2) below which an energy absorbing assembly (3) is positioned such that normally the static weight of an occupant does not depress the squab sufficiently to be additionally supported by the energy absorbing assembly, but in vertical overload conditions, e.g. following an emergency landing, the inertia of an occupant depresses the squab to be additionally supported by the energy absorbing assembly, the energy absorbing assembly comprising a hammock 8 suspended by four straps 9, all of flexible but substantially inextensible material, the straps being secured to plastically deformable energy absorbing levers 12 fixed to tubular members 4, 5, such that loading before deformation is applied at a relatively low mechanical advantage and subsequent loadings after deformation are applied at a progressively greater mechanical advantage. During deformation, friction between the straps 9 and members 4, 5 provides further energy absorption.
