Abstract

1523301 Temperature compensation for electronic instruments W & T AVERY Ltd 26 Feb 1976 [28 Feb 1975] 8380/75 Heading G1N The output of an electronic instrument mounted in a housing is compensated for the effects of temperature gradients existing in the housing. An electronic weighing machine of the type shown in Patent No. 1263182 and including a platform supported by a load receiving member mounted in cantilever fashion by three flexure strips forming a parallelogrammic linkage, one of which strips carries strain gauges has the strips enclosed within a housing which also contains a power supply and digital display circuitry. The temperature in the housing due to the electrical equipment is not uniform and can result in a change in the geometric configuration of the transducer resulting in erroneous results. To compensate for these effects a pair of temperature sensitive elements such as thermistors, thermocouples or temperature dependant resistors are mounted at spaced apart locations in the housing and connected in series. Two such resistors in one embodiment have equal temperature coefficients so that the change in voltage at the junction thereof is indicative of the temperature difference between the locations whereas changes in absolute temperature have no effect. The junction point is connected via a resistive network to the non-inverting input of a unity gain differential amplifier to the inverting input of which is applied the transducer output. By adjusting the resistive network the magnitude of the change due to temperature difference is made equal and opposite to the change occurring in the signal derived from the transducer due to temperature difference and compensation is achieved. Compensation signals dependant on both differential and absolute temperature may be produced if resistors of unequal temperature coefficients and/or unequal value are used. The temperature sensitive resistors may be connected in a bridge circuit. A plurality of pairs of resistors may be used located at different positions.
