Abstract

The novel thermocurable and film-forming synthetic resin is obtained by reacting a phenol containing hydrogen which is bonded to aromatic carbon and is capable of reacting with formaldehyde, and aliphatic hydrocarbyl containing at least one double bond bonded to aromatic carbon (component A), a polybutadiene having a mean molecular weight of between 300 and 6,000 and having an iodine number of between 250 and 600 (component B), maleic anhydride (component C) and formaldehyde (component D). For the preparation, either from 15 to 70 parts by weight of B are reacted with between 5 to 25 parts by weight of C, the reaction product is subsequently hydrolyzed and then reacted further with a product of the condensation of from 30 to 85 parts by weight of A, optionally from 10 to 30 parts by weight of monohydroxybenzene and from 10 to 30 parts by weight of D in the form of paraformaldehyde. Alternatively, from 15 to 70 parts by weight of B, from 30 to 85 parts by weight of A and from 5 to 25 parts by weight of C can be reacted, the resultant intermediate subsequently being condensed further in a conventional manner with D in the form of paraformaldehyde. The novel synthetic resin is used as the binder in various paints (surface coatings, lacquers, enamels).
