Abstract

1522948 Multi-layer paper SOLVAY & CIE 20 May 1977 [21 May 1976] 21325/77 Heading D2B [Also in Division B5] In a composite paper of three superposed layers, the layers comprise a base layer adapted to be applied to a substrate (e.g. a wall), consisting of at least 90% of cellulosic fibres; an intermediate layer consisting of polyolefin fibrils; and a face layer consisting of 80% to 50% of cellulosic fibres and 20% to 50% of polyolefin fibrils; the percentages being based on the dry weights of the layers concerned. The layers may be made by papermaking techniques, superposed moist, and dried; or they may be made separately and assembled by calendering at 140‹C after drying; or the composite may be produced on a multi-ply paper-making machine having several stuff chests. The face layer may be coated with a vinyl resin to make it hydrophobic and may be printed or decorated. The base layer may be coated with a water-activatable adhesive. The bond between base and intermediate layers is comparatively weak so that on stripping from a wall the face and intermediate layers come away and the base layer remains attached.
