Abstract

1522880 Emptying bags NARASAKI SHIP BUILDING CO Ltd and SNOW BRAND MILK PRODUCTS CO Ltd 21 Oct 1976 [12 Aug 1976] 43805/76 Heading B8C A bag opening and emptying apparatus comprises a pair of spaced co-planar horizontal plates 1, I<SP>1</SP> adapted to receive a filled bag thereon, each plate being pivotally supported at its outer end on a horizontal axle 2, 2<SP>1</SP> and having a push member 5, 5<SP>1</SP> thereabove, and a cutting member 19 having an upwardly directed cutting edge disposed immediately below the gap between the inner ends of plates 1, 1<SP>1</SP> and adapted to cut the central part of the lower surface of a filled bag when the plates 1, 1<SP>1</SP> rotate downwardly about the horizontal axles to let the bag fall under its own weight and be pushed down by the push members 5, 5<SP>1</SP>. In operation a full bag fed by a conveyer 21 is located on plates 1, 1<SP>1</SP> by an adjustable stop plate 24. A sensor 25 on the plate controls subsequent operation of the apparatus as follows (i) a cutter 18 is advanced by a cylinder 16 to sever the upper surface of the bag, and then withdrawn, (ii) cylinders 6, 6<SP>1</SP> are operated to downwardly rotate the plates 1, 1<SP>1</SP> so that the lower surface of the bag is severed by cutter 19 as the bag is pushed downwardly by members 5, 5<SP>1</SP>, and simultaneously sharp-ended supporting rods 10, 10<SP>1</SP> pass through holes 15, 151 in plates 1, 1<SP>1</SP> to pierce the severed bag halves and retain them, (iii) compressed air is supplied via rods 10, 10<SP>1</SP> (which are tubular) to completely empty the bag halves, (iv) cylinders 6, 6<SP>1</SP> are again operated to return the plates 1, 1<SP>1</SP> to their original positions, and (v) a sweeping plate 26 is advanced over the plates 1, 1<SP>1</SP> to remove the empty bag halves.
