Abstract

1522796 Measuring shapes and thickness: measuring area SHOE & ALLIED TRADES RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 10 Oct 1975 [10 Oct 1974] 44032/74 Headings G1M and G1N Apparatus for measuring areas of irregular articles e.g. sheepskins comprises means to feed the article 46 beneath a transverse row of nozzles 52 subject to pressure or vacuum, obturation of a nozzle by the article producing a signal, the signals across the row being counted at spaced intervals and giving the area. The nozzles may be in vertically moveable elements 50 mounted between spaced rollers 24 a-c &c. and connected to switches 60. The roller shaft 24b may carry an apertured disc (78) Fig. 5 (not shown), which interrupts a jet or photo-electric beam to cause a scanner to sample the condition of the switches at given intervals. The article may be carried on an apertured belt 2, the roller mounting of which is spring biased towards the rollers 24 a-c &c. Alternatively the latter may be transversely moveable. A roller may replace the belt 2. Vertical movement of the rollers or member 50 by the article could be used to determine the latter's thickness. Means could be provided to stamp the area value on the article.
