1522793 Metal complex dyestuffs and pigments D ST CLAIR BLACK 29 July 1975 [31 July 1974] 33853/74 Heading C4P [Also in Division C2] Novel pigments and dyestuffs have the formula wherein M is a metal of atomic number 22-30, 40-48 or 72-80 (all ranges inclusive) in the divalent or trivalent state; R' is -(CH 2 ) n - in which n is 2 or 3, -CH=CH-CH= or -COCO-; R<SP>2</SP> is a divalent aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon radical which may be further substituted; X and Y are each H, halogen, alkyl, aryl, alkoxy, acyl, SO 3 H, carbalkoxy, amino, acylamino or arylazo; Z is an anion; and, depending on the valence state of M and the nature of R', -pis a covalent or co-ordinate linkage and m is zero, 1 or 2; and when M is a six-co-ordinate metal the two additional co-ordination positions are filled by any suitable ligand; but exclude those wherein (i) X=Y=H, R' is -(CH 2 ) 2 -, R<SP>2</SP> is alkylene or o-phenylene, and M is Ni(II], Co(II) or Cu(II); (ii) X=Y=pNO 2 (with respect to N), R' is -(CH 2 ) 2 or 3 -, R<SP>2</SP> is alkylene or o-phenylene, and M is Ni(II); and (iii) X=Y=H, R' is R<SP>2</SP> is alkylene or o-phenylene, and M is Ni(II), Cu(II) or Co(III). R<SP>2</SP> may be a tetravalent radical, e.g. of the structure in which case the compounds contain two metal containing residues of the stated structure. When R' is -(CH 2 ) n - these compounds are prepared by treating a compound of the formula with H 2 N-R<SP>2</SP>-NH 2 in the presence of a suitable compound of the metal M in the divalent state. Oxidation of the products wherein R<SP>1</SP> is -(CH 2 ) 3 - produces products wherein R' is Products wherein M is Ni(II) or Cu(II) and rings A and B are para-substituted by Br may be prepared by bromination of the corresponding unsubstituted compounds. Products wherein R' is -CO-CO- are prepared by reacting an o-amino-benzaldehyde or two different o-amino-benzaldehydes with (COCl) 2 or C 2 H 5 O.CO.COCl and then reacting the product with H 2 N-R<SP>2</SP>-NH 2 and the appropriate metal compound. Examples illustrate the preparation of the claimed compounds and also of the compounds of Formula (I) excluded by excluding provisions (i), (ii) and (iii). The compounds are used to dye textile materials, e.g. wool.
