Abstract
1522632 Tracheotomy tubes B C FIRTH 13 April 1976 [14 April 1975 19 June 1975] 15148/75 and 26058/75 Heading A5R A tracheotomy tube having an inflatable cuff 4 at one end for holding it in position has an aperture 3 in its wall and an insert 2 for selectively opening or closing the aperture for permitting the patient to breathe naturally when the aperture is open or through a ventilator secured to the tube when the aperture is closed. The insert 2 may be a tube which is slidable within the tracheotomy tube and having cut-away portions 8, 10, 12 and a sealing surface 9 which closes the aperture 3 for ventilator breathing when the insert is placed in the tracheotomy tube the insert in wholly removed to open the aperture 3 or is replaced by a similar insert having an aperture corresponding to the aperture 3 in place of the sealing surface 9 for natural breathing. Alternatively, the insert may be a resilient strip (43) Fig. 4 (not shown) slidable in guides (41) internally of the tracheotomy tube for selectively opening or closing the aperture. The ventilator may be connected with the tracheotomy tube through a connector (17) Fig. 3 (not shown) rotatable relative to the tracheotomy tube and having a part (21) closable by a plug 22 for permitting the insertion of a catheter.
