Abstract

1522351 Fibre-reinforced foamed articles EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 26 Sept 1975 39521/75 Heading B5A A foam plastics article reinforced with randomly oriented fibre filaments distributed throughout the article in such a way that the weight ratio of fibres to resin is substantially uniform is made by mixing together fibres and at least one component of a foamable resin composition for a time sufficient to separate the fibres into discrete filaments and to wet these filaments with the resin component(s), so forming a substantially uniform dispersion of randomly oriented filaments in the resin component(s), intimately mixing this dispersion with the balance of components necessary to form a foamable resin composition and allowing the mixture to foam in a mould. Preferably the article (e.g. of polyurethane polyester, polyolefin, phenol or urea aldehyde resins or natural or synthetic elastomers) is formed with a lowdensity core and a high-density skin and contains 1 to 50 wt. per cent (based on the weight of resin) of randomly oriented glass fibre filaments; since the weight ratio of fibre to resin is substantially uniform, a high proportion of the fibres are concentrated in the high density skin (whose density may be 30 to 60 lb./ft.<SP>3</SP>, compared with 1 to 3 lb./ft.<SP>3</SP> for the low-density core). Carbon, graphite and boron fibres may also be used; and the fibres usually have a length between # and 1 inch.
