Abstract

1521580 Spring compressor tools K D KLOSTER 4 Nov 1976 [21 Nov 1975] 45974/76 Heading B4W A spring compressor tool for use on the suspension of a vehicle without removal of the suspension from the vehicle comprises upper and lower U-shaped pressure shoes 33, 32 each defining a helical channel 35, 34 for receiving a coil of the spring, a pair of pneumatic cylinders 28 positioned between the shoes and connected to the lower shoe and a pair of cylinder housings 30 connected to the upper shoe such that the shoes move together to compress the springs when compressed air is introduced into the cylinders. The lower shoe may be replaced by an adapter 130 for mounting the tool on a bench, the adapter being connected to the cylinders by a flange 132 secured to the bench, a bracket 131 depending from the flange and carrying a pair of pivoted clamping levers 138 for engagement with the housing 13 of a shock absorber of the suspension. The two shoes may be adjustable to allow the channels to engage the surfaces of the spring coil. The upper shoe may also be vertically adjustable relative to the housings.
