Abstract

1521396 Polyester/acrylic polymer compositions and their production. BAYER AG 8 Dec 1976 [13 Dec 1975] 51212/76 Headings C3M and C3V [Also in Division C2] A lacquer binder is prepared by polymerizing at 100-160‹ C. (1) 5-25 wt. per cent (based on (1) and (2)) of one or more acrylic and/or methacrylic monomers in the presence of (2) 75-95 wt. per cent (based on (1) and (2 of a saturated polyester of average molecular weight 300-2,000 obtained by the polycondesnation of (A) a mixture of alcohols free from ether groups and comprising 30-90 mol per cent of one or more C2-15 saturated aliphatic and/or saturated cycloaliphatic dihydric alcohols and 10-70 mol per cent of one or more trito hexahydric saturated C3-12 aliphatic alcohols and (B) a mixture of acids comprising 50-95 mol per cent of one or more C4-14 aromatic, saturated cycloaliphatic and/or saturated aliphatic polycarboxylic acids and 5-50 mole per cent of one or more C7-11 aromatic, saturated cycloaliphatic and/or saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acids, the ratio of OH to COOH groups in the starting materials being 1À10 to 1À45 : 1 and the molar-ratio of polyhydric alcohols to polycarboxylic acids being 1À25 to 1À48 : 1. Suitable acrylic monomers are (meth)acrylic acid, (meth)acrylate esters and acrylamide. In the examples, the polyester is derived from trimethylol propane, propylene-1,2-glycol, phthalic anhydride, adipic acid and alpha ethyl hexanoic acid.
