Abstract

1520800 Polyurethane compositions BASF AG 5 Dec 1975 [6 Dec 1974 (2)] 49984/75 Heading C3R Polyurethane compositions, which may or may not be foamed, are prepared by reacting an organic polyisocyanate with a dispersion comprising a polyether polyol or polyester polyol of mean molecular weight from 500 to 7000 and 1 to 40% by weight, based on the weight of the polyol, of an at least partially cross-linked particulate polymer of average particle size from 500 to 5000 Angstrom units. The particulate polymer is suitably prepared by dispersion polymerization in an aqueous dispersion medium, the medium being at least partially removed after mixing the polymer dispersion with the polyol. Mono-olefinic monomers are suitably copolymerized with crosslinking agents such as divinylbenzene to produce the particulate polymers. It is preferred that at least one of the monomers contains a group reactive towards isocyanates. Graft polymers having two glass transition temperatures, one below - 20‹ C. and the other above +40‹ C., are also suitable as particulate polymers. Preferred graft polymers are those prepared by grafting monomers, e.g. styrene and acrylonitrile, on to a diene rubber backbone. Conventional polyisocyanates and polyether and polyester polyols are used, and when a foam is desired, conventional blowing agents, surfactants and catalysts are incorporated in the reaction mixture.
