Abstract

1520450 Laminates STAMICARBON BV 25 Nov 1975 [25 Nov 1974] 48433/75 Heading B5N A cured decorative laminate is produced by progressively and successively depositing on a backing sheet (a) a layer of liquid curable resin, (b) a first layer of glass fibres whereby it becomes impreganted with the resin, (c) a layer of dry particulate material, e.g. sand, (d) a further layer of liquid curable resin, the total amount of resin present in layers (a) and (d) being sufficient to fully impregnate the layer of particulate material, (e) a second layer of glass fibre so that this second layer adheres to the impregnated layer of particulate material, (f) a layer of thixotropic adhesive resin mixture and (g) a decorative layer, e.g. a decorative sheet or particulate material such as pebbles, and curing the assembled layers on a stationary base. In the drawing the laminate is assembled as guide table 7 mounted on trolley 1 having wheels 2 which run on rails 3 mounted on stationary base 6, and whilst still in the plastic state is laid on to the stationary base on which it is allowed to cure. Backing sheet 9, e.g. of impregnated paper, is coated with a metered quantity of liquid durable resin, from supply rollers 12, 13, covered with first glass fibre strip supplied from roller 15, coated with sand from hopper 19 and with further resin from supply rollers 21, 22, covered with a second glass fibre strip supplied from roller 24, coated with thixotropic adhesive resin from feed 27 and coated with stone chippings from hopper 28. Heat loss downwardly from the base may be inhibited by thermally insulating layer 31 and heating elements 32 which may be heated electrically or with hot water or steam may be provided to accelerate curing of the assembled laminate. Rollers 15 and 24 may be supplied with glass fibre material from rolls 33, 34. The resin may be a polyester produced from hydrogenized bisphenol A, propylene glycol, phthalic anhydride, maleic anhydride and fumaric anhydride.
