Abstract

1520425 Sorting refuse R DONALDSON 31 Oct 1975 [9 Dec 1974] 53129/74 Heading B2H An apparatus for sorting refuse comprises a travelway 2 provided with grids 21 and 51, means for moving refuse along the travelway, and means for raising selected materials from the refuse on the travelway. The refuse may be fed to the travelway 2 via a device 80 provided with rotating knives 81 and fixed blades 81a and is pushed along the travelway by angle-section bars 3 fastened to an endless chain 4. Fine material passes through a first portion of a reciprocating grid 21 into a hopper 22a, coarser material passes through a second portion of the grid 21 into a hopper 22b and glass and non-ferrous metals pass through a reciprocating grid 51 into a hopper 52. Ferrous metals are removed by a rotating drum 11 provided with magnets 12 and are discharged onto a chute 13 by blowing air into the drum. Plastics material is removed by a heated rotating drum 31 which discharges the plastics adhered thereto into a chute 33 with a screw conveyer 34. Paper and cardboard are removed at a station 40 by air blown through a perforated portion of the travelway by a fan 41, the air blast being confined by flexible curtains 44. Rags are removed by blowing air through the grid 51, the rags becoming adhered to a barbed conveyor 61 provided with a comb 62 which discharges the rags into a screw conveyor 63. Any refuse which is not removed arrives at a station 70. The material removed at the station 40 may be passed through an oven (36) to a chute (38) underneath which there is a fan (38a) which raises the paper without disturbing any plastics material present, Fig. 5 (not shown). The material collected in the hopper 52 may be passed between pairs of rollers (55) and then sieved to separate crushed glass from compacted metal, Fig. 6 (not shown). The refuse may be moistened as it moves along the travelway.
