Abstract

1520365 Magnetic control of heating arcs TIOXIDE GROUP Ltd 29 July 1977 [2 Sept 1976] 36502/76 Heading H5H The life of an arc heating electrode is extended by supplying oscillating direct current to a field coil surrounding the electrode where the arc root is located so that field coil current oscillates at a frequency between 5 Î 10<SP>-1</SP> to 1 Î 10<SP>-4</SP> Hz. This causes reciprocation possibly accompanied by rotation of the arc root. A thyristor, a series reactor or a saturable reactor may provide the oscillatory D.C.
