Abstract

1519858 Liquid cooling of IC engine valves KLOCKNER-HUMBOLDT-DEUTZ AG 18 Sept 1975 [11 Oct 1974] 38350/75 Heading F1B A valve 1 in a valve housing 2 of an I.C. engine cylinder head 3 is cooled by liquid passing from a supply pipe 5 to a discharge pipe 7 by way of branch pipes 9, 11 and a changeover valve 10, which can be moved from a first position allowing coolant to flow via a cooling space in the valve housing 2, Fig. 1, to a second position cutting off such flow and connecting the valve housing cooling space to a drain pipe 15, Fig. 2 (not shown). The valve 10 is moved between its two positions by a mechanism 12, the arrangement being such that a valve cover 13 can only be seated on the cylinder head 3 when the valve 10 is in its first position and the valve 1 and housing 2 can only be removed from the cylinder head 3 when the valve 10 is in its second position, thus minimizing loss of coolant. When the valve 10 is moved to its second position, a bleed valve 16 opens to admit air which may be supplied by an air line to ensure that the water drains quickly from the space in the valve housing 2. In Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), a rotary valve 17 is provided instead of valve 10 and in its position to supply coolant to the valve housing 2 (Fig. 3) an operating lever 19 allows the valve cover 13 to be mounted on the cylinder head 2; whereas in its position to drain the coolant spaces of the valve housing (Fig. 4) the lever 19 does not permit mounting of the valve cover 13. A cam 20 on valve spindle 21 actuates a bolt 22 so that the valve housing 2 and valve 1 can only be removed when the lever 19 and valve 17 are in the position to prevent coolant from flowing to the valve housing.
