Abstract

1519771 Head protector for motor cyclists P W BOTHWELL 4 July 1975 [4 April 1974] 14995/74 Heading A3V A rigid head protector is provided with one or more inflatable bags which when inflated forms an impact-absorbing cushion enveloping substantially the whole head. The protector shown comprises a plastics structure 10 having bags 13, 14 held close by internal fasteners but inflatable by gas generators 19 to the positions shown dotted to envelop the structure, including the visor 11. The helmet 12 is rotatably received in the structure and an inertia reel device, not shown, has webs connected to the helmet sides. In another embodiment the bags are provided with interlocking formations (18, Figs. 2, 3 not shown) to prevent separation on impact, and incorporate vents allowing gas to be expelled therefrom on impact to absorb the shock. The gas generators may be of the pyrotechnic or the compressed gas types. A separable umbilical cord may be provided where the generator is not mounted on the structure.
