Abstract

1519397 Hydrogen and oxygen from water EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY 22 March 1977 [1 April 1976] 13348/76 Heading C1A Hydrogen is produced from water by carrying out the Bunsen reaction, i.e.: SO 2 + 2H 2 O + I 2 # 2HI + H 2 SO 4 in liquid sulphur dioxide as a solvent and recovering hydrogen from the hydrogen iodide by thermal decomposition. The iodine obtained may be recycled. The sulphuric acid produced may be thermally decomposed to oxygen, water and sulphur dioxide. The sulphur dioxide may be recycled. A metal oxide (ZnO specified) may be added to the starting materials to form a metal sulphate which may be thermally decomposed to recover the metal oxide and sulphur dioxide which are then recycled.
