Abstract

1410120 Production of hydrogen and oxygen RHEINISCHE BRAUNKOHLENWERKE AG 21 Dec 1973 [29 Dec 1972] 59347/73 Heading C1A Hydrogen and oxygen are produced continuously by the chemical decomposition of water in the steps (i) conversion of steam and carbon monoxide into hydrogen and carbon dioxide in known manner; (ii) separating carbon dioxide from the resulting mixture; (iii) heating the carbon dioxide with sulphur dioxide in an aqueous medium to a temperature from 250‹ to 400‹ C. and a pressure of 40 to 200 atmospheres to give carbon monoxide and sulphuric acid; (iv) separating carbon monoxide from the resulting mixture; (v) concentrating the remaining sulphuric acid; (vi) treating the concentrate with a metal oxide (e.g. ferric oxide, aluminium oxide or zinc oxide) to produce a sulphate capable of conversion on heating to a metal oxide and sulphur trioxide or sulphur dioxide and oxygen; (vii) decomposing the sulphate by heating it to a temperature above 400‹ C. and decomposing any sulphur trioxide by heating it to a temperature above 800‹ C. and (viii) separating off the sulphur dioxide from the resulting gas mixture by quenching it to a temperature below 300‹ C. and recovering the oxygen. The carbon monoxide from step (iv) is recycled to step (i), and the sulphur dioxide from step (viii) is recycled to step (iii) while hydrogen is recovered from step (ii) and oxygen is recovered from step (viii). The heat required for the process may be provided by coolant issuing from a high temperature nuclear reactor.
