Abstract
1519385 Polymeric electrophoresis support film FUJI PHOTO FILM CO Ltd 23 Aug 1976 [29 Aug 1975] 34959/76 Heading C7B [Also in Division C3] A porous polymeric film which is used as a support material in conducting electrophoresis comprises a nonionic film-forming polymer with 1-15 wt. per cent of a nonionic surface active agent and/or 0À1-15 wt. per cent of a cellulose ether, the film has pores of diameter 0À1-10Á and has an electroendosmosis factor (as defined by a method of test) of 0 to + 10mm. The film may be made by adding a nonionic surfactant and/or a cellulose ether to a solution of a film-forming polymer and then drying the solution to form a porous film e.g. by casting a film on a glass plate. In the Examples films were made from solutions of (1) cellulose di- and tri-acetate and triacetin in methylene chloride, methanol and water, containing a polyoxyethylene nonylphenyl ether as non- ionic surfactant, (2) as (1) but using methyl cellulose in place of the surfactant, and (3) an alcohol soluble nylon and diethylene ether in aq. methanol and containing the surfactant of (1). The film-forming polymer may also be a polyvinyl chloride, nitro-cellulose, acetyl or acetybutyl cellulose or cellulose propionate. The nonionic surfactant may also be a polyoxyethylene sorbitan alkyl ester. A haemoglobin solution was fractionated using the porous film of Example 2 which had been dipped in an aq. solution of an ampholytic protein containing sucrose, adhered to a glass plate, subjected to isoelectric focusing, and coated in the centre of the film with the haemoglobin, an electrode solution for the anode being provided by inserting between the electrode and the film a filter paper soaked in a phosphoric acid solution containing sucrose and that for the cathode by a filter paper soaked in an ethylene diamine solution containing sucrose.
