Abstract

1519322 Membrane separation U O P INC 24 Sept 1975 39083/75 Heading B1X A separation process comprises subjecting to foam flotation separation in a flotation separation stage a feed comprising a liquid component and material which is entrained in the liquid component, at least part of the entrained material being removed from said feed by said foam flotation separation and passing in the course of said flotation separation to an upper foam-containing zone of said flotation separation stage, withdrawing from a locus lower in said flotation separation stage than said upper zone, feed material from which entrained material has been so removed, conducting one or more membrane separations comprising at least one such membrane separation applied to material withdrawn as aforesaid and optionally one or more membrane separations applied to material forming a permeate as hereafter referred to, each membrane separation comprising contacting such withdrawn or permeate material in a membrane separation stage with a membrane at an elevated pressure to effect a desired product separation resulting in formation of a concentrate having an elevated pressure and a permeate, discharging said permeate, discharging said concentrate at least part of a concentrate from at least one membrane separation stage passing through a jet pumping ejector which has a throat zone which has a pressure lower than that of, and which is in communication with, the upper foam containing zone of said flotation separation stage so that foam and entrained material removed from said feed by said foam flotation separation is caused by the pressure gradient to be withdrawn from said upper zone and discharged from the jet pumping ejector with concentrate material, or is assisted in said withdrawal and discharge by said pressure gradient. The process is applicable to processing of sulphite liquor or of whey. In one embodiment the permeate is subjected to a further membrane separation.
