Abstract

1519319 Modified acrylic polymers, and copolymers thereof VIANOVA KUNSTHARZ AG 22 Dec 1975 [23 Dec 1974] 52390/75 Heading C3P Macromolecular monomers are obtained by reacting (a) parts by weight of a copolymer of 80-50 wt.% of a C8-18 n-alkyl methacrylate and 20-50 wt.% of glycidyl methacrylate, (b) 1-4 parts of acrylic or methacrylic acid, and (c) 23-57 parts of a monocarboxylic acid of formula R-(CH2)n-COOH in which n is 0-3 and R is substituted phenyl (the substituent having at least 4 carbon atoms, naphthyl, substituted naphthyl or diphenyl. In Examples, copolymers of decyl or dodecyl methacrylate with glycidyl methacrylate are reacted first with methacrylic acid and then with p-t-butylbenzoic acid, biphenyl-4-carboxylic acid or naphthalene monocarboxylic acid. Stable copolymer dispersions are obtained by copolymerizing in an organic liquid a mixture of 10-20 wt.% of a macromolecular monomer as above with 80-90 wt.% of a mixture of olefinically unsaturated monomers of which at least one is hydroxy-functional, e.g. a mixture of styrene, ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate and hydroxyethyl acrylate.
